I love poetry and young people and I always look for opportunities to combine the two. If you remember last spring, some of my students from the Powel School , with the help of Coach Spivey Elizabeth Spivey and Julia Terry from PA Humanities , had their poems enshrined on the pavement of a neighborhood playground ;Carroll Park, in West Philly. Part of the Rain Poetry Project, students’ poems are colorfully showcased throughout the playground and some poems you can only see when they’re watered; when it rains.
Students first participated in workshops with Philly’s most iconic poets @yolandawisher @enochthepoet , David Jones and Telicia Darius. Thank you to teacher volunteer Camille Bounds. Students, from public schools around the the city, participated in this project and had their haiku enshrined in similar public spaces.
On Tuesday, January 30th-see flyer for details- PA Humanities is hosting a Book Launch featuring the poetry of students who participated in this project! Come join the celebration!
